Design for Reminder App

Problem. This project was about conducting research and approaching a problem with a user-centered design process to design a fictitious a reminder mobile app called ReminderX.

Action. I began with user research by conducting and recording three interviews to find out more about how participants manage tasks with or without mobile applications. Using the information I collected from these interviews, I created a persona of a user. Based on this persona, I then developed work flow sketches in pencil, and went on to refine them and put into wireframe sketches.

Results. The final wireframe sketches were presented with annotations. I created a workflow to show how reminders and tasks could be added to lists via keyboard input or dictation. Tasks could then be further organized into different categories based on the user’s needs, and edited and deleted as needed. The focus for this project was more on the wireframes and workflows than the visual design.

Again, larger images shown below for detail.

Learning. The process of examining a problem form the perspectives of different users and taking the steps to define a solution helped me gain a better understanding of how to gather data by interviews and observation, and develop solutions based on the data. I especially enjoyed this exercise, as product design and development is an interest of mine.

Sketches and design process examples are shown below.

After creating a persona, my first step was to sketch out workflows / wireframes that show a rough design which is derived from my research and interviewing users. I wanted to address ease of use, and the ability to have multiple categories of tasks that were easy to add, edit and delete. From there, I refined my original sketches into annotated wireframes.

Design Tenets

  • App should address the input of information to make it almost effortless for the user.

  • App should have easy to use organizational features for quickly categorizing and prioritizing tasks across different lists.

  • App should be usable by men and women in a broad age range, so it will need to appeal to a large audience.

  • Reminder function should be easy to set, and appear with enough frequency to make it visible, but not too much and become annoying.
